TRX still The King

TRX Still the King as Raptor R Debuts with Less Horsepower and Torque

July 18, 2022 by Patrick Rall
This morning, Ford Motor Company pulled the sheet back from the long-awaited F-150 Raptor R – the V8-powered pickup that would finally defeat the Ram 1500 TRX. Ford fans were sure that the Raptor R would pack gobs more power than the TRX, since the GT500 engine that was expected to come under the hood offers 760 horsepower in the Mustang.

It might still be a little quicker based on it’s weight. But very underwhelming considering the price. And people are still lining up to get fleeced.

Yes, it is 4 to 500 lbs lighter but it’s starting price is up there. Another thing to consider though is that it has 37’s. That is more unsprung weight to deal with

Yeah, I saw a guy say putting 37s on his TRX cost him .7 on 0-60. The Ford 10 speed does have a low first gear which should mitigate some of that but I wouldn’t be surprised if the TRX still wins.

The Gen 3 R has hp per cubic inch that is pretty impressive. should be more room in the TRX. Stock R vs stock TRX is going to be a better apples to apples. But the R is not worth 109k to me. I kinda was expecting a roll cage as well as a 5 point harness option.

Oh I think they are going to be very close, in fact due to weight and the raptor having the 10 speed i suspect the raptor will be faster off the line but not by much. They both will be bad ass vehicles but I agree, 109k starting point is rough

I do think it’s strange that Ford hasn’t said anything about it’s performance. Talk about burying the lede. If it’s faster, you’d think they would wanna say so.

Hell, Ram even left them a bigger opening by drastically understating the TRX’s 0-60. 4.5 seconds is way off, under 4 is very routine in decent air.

Almost makes me wonder if the Raptor R will have heavy torque management in lower gears that may slow it down. There was a leak about durability issues and they already detuned the motor so who knows what else they had to do.

If they are that close in performance, it will come down to who is the better driver behind the wheel.

The Raptor R will no doubt have better performance. That price though, ugh....

Seems a little wonky that they're just going to potentially pull the plug on the Hellcat. They are taking a real gamble with their loyalists.

They won't pull the plug entirely, It will come back as either a supercharged 6 or an electric truck. I am thinking electric after seeing this about the Challenger and Charger tonite....

The new electric Challenger is mean. Reminds me of The Wraith (showing my age)

I find some of it gimmicky, but I give dodge credit for trying to make it more appealing to a larger number of people.
